MFC 16: Anger Management
Friday, May 9, 2008 at River Cree Resort and Casino SOLD OUT
Ryan “The Real Deal” Ford moved a step closer to a shot at the vacant MFC welterweight title with a dominating performance over Matt Hughes-trained C.J. Fernandes.
Ford ended the fight at 2:23 of the first round securing a rear-naked choke that Fernandes could not escape. It was a convincing victory for Ford who had been called a “one-dimensional fighter” by Fernandes and his camp prior to the bout. It was the second straight win for Ford over a UFC veteran and moved him directly into a 170-pound title fight at MFC 17. The win also earned Ford the Submission of the Night honor.
The Fight of the Night was certainly the light heavyweight battle between Jason “The Show” Kuchera and Aron “The Poster Boy” Lofton. As expected the two undefeated heavy hitters went toe-to-toe until Lofton got Kuchera’s back late in Round 1 and delivered a series of crushing blows that opened up a severe cut. Lofton then locked on a rear-naked choke that was inexplicably broken up by the referee to check Kuchera’s cut. Although he made it through the round, Kuchera was fatigued and despite dealing out some big shots of his own in Round 2, Kuchera was eventually caught in a guillotine choke and forced to tap out in the final seconds.

MFC 15: Rags to Riches
Friday, Feb. 22, 2008 at River Cree Resort and Casino SOLD OUT
Holding main-event status for the first time, Ryan “The Real Deal” Ford overcame his opponent’s trash talk, a couple of powerful high kicks and some strange circumstances to pick up the biggest victory of his young career by taking out UFC veteran Pete “The Secret Weapon” Spratt.
Spratt and Ford had carried on for weeks with plenty of verbal heat and the animosity built right up until fight night. Ford proved he had a good chin twice in Round 1 when he was caught by high kicks while going for the takedown. He went on the attack late in the round and piled up the strikes as the seconds ticked down. In fact, neither he nor referee Herb Dean heard the bell signaling the end of the round and Ford smashed Spratt twice. Spratt needed time to recover and looked going into Round 2 but Ford turned the tables again, going on the offensive, jumping on Spratt’s back and locking on a rear-naked choke in the middle of the ring to force the tapout at 4:01.
The Submission of the Night was earned the hard way by Jesse Forbes who took an absolute beating from Chris Camozzi for more than two rounds. It seemed Camozzi couldn’t miss with a punch, kick or knee but he got caught at 1:45 of Round 3 leaving an arm exposed in a ground-and-pound sequence and Forbes secured the submission tapout. The Knockout of the Night went to Jason “The Show” Kuchera who battled through illness to finish off Allan Hope with vicious strikes at 1:11 of Round 2.

MFC 14: High Rollers
Friday, November 23, 2007 at River Cree Resort & Casino SOLD OUT
For the first time, the MFC moved into its official new home at the River Cree Resort and Casino. The main event that night featured what some so-called MMA experts figured to be a mismatch as young gun Brad Zazulak took on UFC and The Ultimate Fighter veteran Shonie Carter.
The end result was a mismatch of sorts but in the exact opposite direction. Zazulak powered through Carter and was delivering a series of powerful strikes in ground-and-pound position when Carter signaled to referee Herb Dean that he had sustained a shoulder injury. Carter deemed himself unable to continue which awarded Zazulak a victory by TKO – a win that was surely coming in seconds anyway without the injury.
Ryan Ford dominated Mike Sorensen with a barrage of strikes and slams but Sorensen hung in for a full round before succumbing 51 seconds into Round 2. Ford looked every bit ready to take the next step into the upper echelon of welterweight contenders as he beat down the always-game Sorensen who was left a bloodied and bruised mess.
In the other featured bout of the night, Ryan Heck stormed out to a two-round advantage with a strong ground-and-pound attack and then hung on in Round 3 to narrowly pull out a unanimous decision victory over Donald Sanchez in a battle for top ranking in the MFC lightweight division.

The Knockout of the Night honour went to Ryan Ford as he scored a series of thunderous slams that paved the way to victory over Randy Valette at 2:07 of Round 1. MFC 12: High Rollers
Friday, June 22, 2007 at Shaw Conference Centre SOLD OUT
A new king was crowned as the MFC proclaimed its first heavyweight champion when Scott “Punk Haole” Junk defeated Jimmy Ambriz in front of more than 3,000 fans.
Both big men – Junk weighed in at 262 and Ambriz at 274 – went to war with long-range bombs that included Junk catching Ambriz right on the chin with a right. Ambriz went after an ankle lock but Junk escaped. After Ambriz recovered from a disputed low blow, Junk continued to press the action with knees as he backed Ambriz into a corner.
At the end of Round 1, Ambriz refused to continue and Junk was awarded the victory and the championship belt.
Also on this night, Roger Hollett left no doubt as to who was the No. 1 contender for the MFC’s light heavyweight title when he scored his second shuddering knockout in the MFC ring. Only 15 seconds into the fight, Hollett stood over a crashed Shane Biever – a left hook sent him to the mat and then Hollett stepped into a right that put Biever’s lights out.MFC Unplugged 3: Hits Back
Friday, April 20, 2007 at Crowne Plaza SOLD OUT
The MFC returned to an intimate setting and the capacity crowd of 1,000 saw a rugged tussle between two men set on becoming the No. 1 contender for the MFC heavyweight title.
Scott Junk eventually took a grueling battle against Dominic Richard but not before some wild action. Richard took Junk down with a great hip toss but was then deducted one point for kneeing a downed opponent. After both men locked up in the middle of the ring, they struggled for position and ended up tumbling out of the ring. A melee ensued but once order was relatively restored Junk went on the attack and sensing his opponent had gassed out, he pounced and rained down blows until Richard verbally submitted at 1:23 of Round 2.
Ryan McGillivray ran his undefeated streak to 3-0 as he dominated Kyle Ayotte and locked on an armbar at 4:42 of Round 1.
In a featured welterweight battle that had created quite a stir in the media, Edmonton Police Service officer Ryan Lawley was successful in his professional fighting debut despite entering the fight hiding the effects of a broken arm and a broken bone in his foot. Lawley went on to post a unanimous decision victory over Tim Blanchard.
And in the Fight of the Night, Garrett Curran, despite being badly cut by a perfectly placed elbow strike, fought through to finally get the better of Josh Kyrejto, winning with a guillotine choke at 3:23 of Round 3.

MFC 11: Gridiron
Friday, Feb. 3, 2007 at Shaw Conference Centre SOLD OUT
A title fight and two mega Superfights headlined the most highly anticipated MFC fight card in history.
And a sold-out crowd of more than 3,000 couldn’t wait to Edmonton Eskimos Adam Braidwood and Mike Maurer in the ring. Maurer, though, had his night come to an abrupt end as Roger Hollet caught him with a kick that rattled the Eskimos fullback. Hollett then ended the fight in stunning fashion with a powerful left hook that dropped Maurer to the mat unconscious at just 31 seconds of Round 1.
Upset by his teammate’s loss and riled up by antics during the weigh-in, Braidwood took out his frustration on Ryan Jimmo. The Eskimos rookie defensive lineman smashed Jimmo with a short precise right and then delivered a vicious and furious series of blows that the former Pan Am Games karate star couldn’t defend with the fight ending by TKO at 1:54 of Round 1. Braidwood’s eye-popping assault before the biggest media turnout in the history of Canadian MMA earned him the Knockout of the Night honour.
And the night ended with a knockout too, as Victor Valimaki defended his MFC light heavyweight title for the first time. He survived an early onslaught before felling Jared Kilkenny like a tree falling in the forest at 3:26 of Round 1 for the KO.
