“I feel that I have an advantage over (Joseph) Henle in every aspect of fighting”, Elvis Mutapcic, about his opponent in the main event of Maximum Fighting Championships 35.
Elvis Mutapcic is a Bosnian-born middleweight living in Des Moines, Iowa. He is 11-2 and on a three fight win streak coming into his next fight, the Main Event of MFC 35, “Explosive Encounter”. He faces Joseph “Leonidas” Henle for the MFC Middleweight Title. I spoke to him over the phone for this interview.
Thank you for your time, Elvis. I understand you work another job when you’re not training or fighting.
Yes, I am an Industrial Mechanic, I love working with my hands.
Tell us a little about growing up in Sarajevo, Bosnia.
Well, the war started when I was four and ended when I was about eight or nine years old. But even after the war was “over”, Bosnia wasn’t yet recovered, not a great place to live.
So the harshness helped make you tougher, then?
Yes, tougher mentally and helped me appreciate where I’m at now.
How did you get into Martial Arts and MMA?
Well, like all kids, I guess I loved watching Bruce Lee movies, Boxing and Kickboxing. It was actually a friend of mine who showed me one of the MMA videos and I felt like I could do that. As good a friend as he was to me, and supportive, I still got snickered at.
When I was 17, I went to a really small, bar show of fights. I signed up with the promoter, lied about my age, signed a waiver and fought.
Who were your early influences and role models?
I liked Bruce Lee, Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson and soccer star, Pele.
Honestly, my real role model was a big brother, because of his work ethic. He worked his ass off for everything he has and helped take care of me when I screwed up. He’s a real work-horse type of guy.
I watched some of your fights, preparing for this interview, you have a great stand up style.
I train in all aspects, but I really like the Muay Thai and Dutch Kickboxing styles, I feel they have the most effective striking in all of fighting.
Talking about this huge Maximum Fighting Championship fight against Joseph Henle, how do you feel you match up against him?
Henle is a well-rounded fighter with a wrestling base, he likes going where the fight goes. He’s not a boring fighter and I think we will have an exciting fight. I feel I have an advantage over Henle in every aspect of fighting. If you match up our strengths, I think I’m better than him, even in wrestling, where it would be closest.
Is there anything you’d like to say to everyone reading this?
I’d like to say thanks to all the MMA fans out there, without them I wouldn’t be able to do what I do. They keep the interest going. Thank you to my sponsors, and my team Round Kick, RYU and Max Muscle.
Thank you for your time and good luck at MFC 35, Elvis!
Thank you, too, Zeus.
