The Squared Circle - The best fit for MMA?
Filler – Matt Miller
- July 2, 2008
There has been a long and never-ending debate in mixed martial arts – a Ring or a Cage?
Preference is the key, some prefer the ring and some prefer the “cage” but which is healthiest when it comes’s to viewing, safety, “mainstream/corporate”, and fighter friendly.
Viewing:
There is no question about it for a live viewing audience a ring is much more suitable. The ring producers less obstacles to view through, meaning less posts, less angles, and no fence to have to see through – ropes on the other hand is a lot more manageable to view through. I’ve been to some of the biggest events in the world and some the only way I saw the action of the fight was on the jumbo screens.
For Immediate Release Maximum Fighting Championship
Mark Pavelich, Owner/President
- June 29, 2008
I would like to take this opportunity to offer a personal response to
comments and actions taken by Drew Fickett over the past 72 hours.
Drew had agreed to and signed a contract to fight on the Maximum Fighting
Championship show on July 25 for the welterweight title against Ryan Ford.
Over the last few days, Drew has caused severe problems and therefore we
find him in complete breach of his contract.
We were shocked to learn Drew agreed on one day's notice to fight as a
middleweight in another organization's event this past Friday. When I
contacted this other organization, its owner immediately cancelled Drew's
fight when informed that he was under contract to fight on the MFC show and
as part of Mr. Fickett's contract he was not allowed to take another fight
up to five weeks before the MFC show.
Exclusive: After agreeing to Strikeforce fight, Drew Fickett forced off card
by MMAjunkie.com Staff - June 27, 2008
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Just hours after Drew Fickett had agreed to fight Luke Stewart in place of Joe Riggs at tonight's Strikeforce event, Fickett, too, has been forced to pull out of the event.
A source close to Fickett tells MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that officials from Maximum Fighting Championships, for whom Fickett was supposed to fight on July 25, have vetoed the Strikeforce bout since it falls within the 45-day non-compete period of their event.
On Thursday the California State Athletic Commission refused to license Riggs for tonight's Strikeforce event at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.
Riggs' agent, Ken Pavia, told MMAjunkie.com early Friday morning that his client was barred from fighting at the event because he disclosed usage of a prescribed pain medication three days prior to Thursday's weigh-ins.
FICKETT NOW OUT; LUKE STEWART SCRATCHED
by Damon Martin - MMAWeekly.com - June 27, 2008
After a very tumultuous 24 hours in which Joe Riggs was pulled from his fight with Luke Stewart and replaced with former Ultimate Fighting Championship fighter Drew Fickett, just as quickly Fickett has been forced to pull out of the bout as well.
Fickett’s manager, Brian Hamper, informed MMAWeekly.com that his fighter had accepted the bout with Stewart on short notice, hoping to step in and fight on Friday night’s Strikeforce card in California.
Problems arose when Maximum Fighting Championship promoter Mark Pavelich made several calls informing both Strikeforce and Fickett’s management team that he was under contract to fight for his promotion on July 25. As a part of Fickett’s contract, there was a five-week no compete clause that prevented him from competing in any fight within that time frame prior to his scheduled bout for MFC.

This new partnership will see MGD regarded as the “official beer” of the MFC and it will be featured at all the MFC shows through the remainder of 2008 including MFC 17: Hostile Takeover on July 25 at the River Cree Resort and Casino. Miller Genuine Draft will also be featured at MFC 18 on September 26 and at MFC 19 on November 28.
Alessio Smack Talks Ford
Sportsnet.ca - June 23, 2008
So what's next for the 29-year-old? Who knows, he may end up fighting back in his home country with the Edmonton-based Maximum Fighting Championship. He came very close to taking a fight there against current welterweight contender Ryan Ford of Edmonton, but the money just wasn't right. Instead Ford took on Spratt and beat him by rear naked choke.
But Alessio said he isn't completely impressed with the kid the promotion is touting as the next big thing in MMA.
Henderson won't be sorry again
By MFC Staff - June 19, 2008
You have to admire a fighter when he offers an apology even after pulling
out a convincing win.
Ben Henderson made his debut in the Maximum Fighting Championship at MFC 16
and schooled Mike Maestas on his way to a third-round stoppage. But in the
ring after his hand was raised in victory, Henderson offered an apology for
a performance he didn't rate among his best. Aiming to be a serious threat
in the upper echelon of the lightweight ranks, Henderson is back at MFC 17
and looking to cement himself as a top contender for the vacant 155-pound
crown. And to make that happen, he'll need an effort that pleases the fans
and himself.
FIRST WE TAKE MANHATTAN
Edmonton Sun
- June 17, 2008
Mark Pavelich is on top of his world.
Maximum Fighting Championships (MFC), his made-in-Edmonton mixed martial arts production company, is now Canada's biggest.
He had a major TV deal for live coverage with uber-sports businessman (Dallas Mavericks) Mark Cuban's HDNet TV - going live into Canada, Mexico and the U.S.A.
Cuban is flying up for MFC 17: Hostile Takeover on July 25 in the once-again sold-out River Cree Casino concert centre - to chew on a few cigars and drink fine whisky with Mark.
