After years of proclamations by many in the Canadian MMA scene that he’d be the next breakthrough star a la Georges St-Pierre, Ryan Ford feels he has finally shed such labels and has proven himself in his own right.
“Everybody always wants to compare me to somebody, but at the end of the day I’m Ryan Ford,” he recently said to MMAWeekly.com.
“I’ll let those people (I’m compared to) be them and I’m going to be me, and people are going to see how I’ve evolved as a fighter in these next few fights.”

Popular light heavyweight eyeing redemption at Retribution
Only a select breed of fighter actively recruits a stand-up war against a bitter opponent.
But that’s exactly what Dwayne Lewis did. After both he and Wilson Gouveia dropped unanimous decisions in their respective matchups at MFC 25, Lewis figured it would be a good idea if the rival light heavyweights both tried to rebound at MFC 26, and do so by squaring off against each other. Now that Ryan Ford has returned to the Maximum Fighting Championship, there is much speculation over just who will be standing across the ring from him.
Ford certainly needs a stiff test of his skills but he's no stranger to that when fighting under the MFC banner. Ford has answered the bell against solid opposition like veterans C.J. Fernandes and LaVerne Clark as well as facing down Pete Spratt in just the sixth fight of his career. MMA IN A RING IS BETTER FOR SPECTATORS
It’s no secret that watching MMA in a cage isn’t great for spectators. Many MMA fans have paid hundreds of dollars for a cageside seat only to discover that they get a better view by watching the fight on the TV screens. But sight lines aren’t the only issue - the action is different too. When not inside the unforgiving walls of a cage, fighters are forced to move and press the action. Former MFC champ set for showdown with Lewis
All the talent in the world won’t get a fighter very far if he doesn’t complement his skills with all the necessary intangibles.
Emanuel Newton is easily one of the MFC’s most-talented fighters with an incredible amount of athleticism. But what Newton has lacked at this key time in his career is the mental game plan to keep himself on the right track. That, says trainer and MFC lightweight champion Antonio McKee, is about to change.
No Rioting on our Watch
Posted: Z-Files #51 - April 20, 2010

What was seen on CBS this past Saturday was to say the least an absolute embarrassment for the sport of mixed martial arts.
And on top of that, it also should be considered a giant step backwards as well. While gigantic steps have been made over the past 10 years for MMA all it takes is one ridiculously stupid incident to push everything back in a big way.

Fioravanti has secret plan for ‘Secret Weapon’

Luigi Fioravanti should be a professional poker player.
He knows he’s got good cards in front of him, but being a shark, he’s not about to tip his hand. No tells, no reveals. Fioravanti is keeping everything close to his chest, but he does have an ace in the hole.
“I have a secret for The Secret Weapon,” touted Fioravanti.

Less Heath the better

The new David Heath is a lot like the old David Heath.
There’s just less of him.

Gavin trains at Zuma Martial Arts in Victoria under the guidance and management of Adam Zugec, one of the elite few Brazilian jiu-jitsu fighters to be awarded a black belt by 7th-degree BJJ black belt Marcus Soares. Also an instructor in Erik Paulson’s Combat Submission Wrestling and a Thai boxing instructor under Ajarn Chai, Zugec is no stranger to the fight game.
Antonio "Mandingo" McKee: The "El Negro" Effect Hits the MFC
Posted: Mar 27, 2010 BY Jeff Chan MFC Staff
Something's going on at the Maximum Fighting Championship that’s making our competitors nervous. Maybe you caught a glimpse at MFC 20: Destined for Greatness or MFC 22: Payoff. Derrick Noble and Carlo Prater sure did. That something is Antonio "Mandingo" McKee, a ferocious fighter who’s been mowing through the ranks for over 10 years and is on a 7-year, 13-fight unbeaten streak. What the other MMA promotions don’t want you to know is that in Antonio McKee, the Maximum Fighting Championship has one of the best fighters in the world.
In the early 2000s, word was circulating through the MMA (then known as NHB, or "no holds barred") world about an aggressive fighter named Antonio McKee.

Former MFC champ replaces Nickels in Vindication lineup
As Dwayne Lewis has made his rapid rise up the MFC’s light heavyweight ladder, each step has come with a stiffer challenge.
Seemingly now just a rung or two away from a title shot should he keep his seven-fight winning streak intact, Lewis will face a more difficult task that originally expected at MFC 25: Vindication. With Mike Nickels backing out of the previously announced bout, Lewis (11-4) will now face former MFC light heavyweight champion Emanuel “The Hardcore Kid” Newton on Friday, May 7 live on HDNet Fights from the Northlands Expo Centre in Edmonton, Alberta.
PETE SPRATT: THE SECRET WEAPON'S EXPLOSIVE RETURN TO THE MFC
Posted: Mar 15, 2010 BY Jeff Chan
The Maximum Fighting Championship loves an exciting fighter and welterweight Pete "Secret Weapon" Spratt more than fits the bill. Of his 20 wins, ten have come via KO and eight by submission. Only half of his fights have gone beyond the first round and only two of those ended in a decision. Pete Spratt obviously comes to win. And his experience in impressive - in his 11 years as a professional MMA fighter he’s been in the ring with Carlos Newton, Robbie Lawler, Georges St. Pierre, and Josh Koscheck, to name a few.

THE LEWIS ARMY: A STORM FROM THE NORTH
Posted: Mar 10, 2010 by Jeff Chan, MFC Staff
Are Dwayne Lewis and Company Taking Over the MFC?
Anyone who’s driven the 435 kms from Fort McMurray, Alberta to Edmonton understands that it isn’t the kind of thing you do just for a fun night out. So how is it that Fort McMurray-based MMA fighter Dwayne Lewis can come down to fight in the Maximum Fighting Championship - in the dead of a northern Canadian winter - and be followed by a legion of almost 500 fans?
Easily recognizable as a deafeningly loud sea of black “Team Lewis” t-shirts taking up most, if not all, of the floor seats at any MFC event, the grassroots phenomenon known as the Lewis Army is the type of thing that makes the Maximum Fighting Championship so special. How does something like this start?

Once gorilla mask comes off, Watson doesn't monkey around
Posted: Feb 27, 2010 by Chris O'Leary, CanWest Media
A fighter's entrance is supposed to be about intimidation.
At most mixed martial arts shows, the fighter will make his way to the ring, cage or octagon with his head covered, eyes fixed on the floor in front of him while ultraviolent gangster rap lyrics blast through the venue's speakers. Maybe Tom 'Kong' Watson didn't get the memo. Or, more appropriate to his style, the English fighter got the memo and told the senders exactly where they could stick it.

Edwards, Watson, Juarez victorious in knockout-filled card
Yves Edwards marked himself as the top contender for the MFC lightweight belt yet it was a pair of spectacular knockouts that stole the show at the Maximum Fighting Championship’s MFC 24: Heat XC on Friday night at the River Cree Resort and Casino, just outside Edmonton, Alberta.
A flurry of punches from Edwards (37-15-1) dropped opponent Derrick “The Eraser” Noble into his corner and Edwards continued to rain down an array of strikes until referee Vern Gorman stepped into to stop the proceedings at 4:44 of Round 1 in the night’s main event. “The Texas Gunslinger,” who was making his debut in the MFC, looked crisp right from the start although Noble (25-13-1) did catch him with a sharp hook in the early moments.
Kilkenny backs out of clash with Kuchera
Posted: Feb 25, 2010 by MFC Staff
The MFC 24: Heat XC bout between Jared Kilkenny and Jason Kuchera has been cancelled after Kilkenny backed out of the fight the day of the weigh-in.
No explanation was given for his last-minute refusal to fight. It is a disappointing turn of events for Kuchera who had worked diligently to get into top physical condition for the encounter. Kuchera, who had even agreed to take the bout at a catchweight of 210 pounds to accommodate Kilkenny, was eyeing a knockout victory that would have put him back in the mix amongst the Heat XC's top light heavyweights.
Major action for Edmonton's MFC

Friday night’s card will mark the end of an era for Pavelich Sports, Inc. The River Cree Resort and Casino, which has played host to 10 MFC events, will no longer house the shows. Relax, Olympic homeless protesters. It’s all taken care of. “People keep asking me why I always wear sunglasses,” said MFC president Mark Pavelich. “That’s because the future looks so bright.” Oh, there was a miscue with the Winspear Centre, whose board of directors apparently deemed the MFC not artsy enough for their venue. Pavelich revealed Wednesday that his next MFC event will be held at the Edmonton Expo Centre.

Travis Galbraith found a career path in mixed martial arts
Sitting on a rickety wooden bench inside Frank Lee's gym on Monday, Travis Galbraith had his fists wrapped and taped by his trainer, Keijiro Noda. As the local mixed martial artist sat through the tedious process of the taping -- Noda carefully wrapped the tape around Galbraith's wrists, padded the fighter's knuckles and tucked the tape through each finger and around his thumbs -- Galbraith cracked jokes.
"Are you going to the fight on Friday?" the 28-year-old asked, referring to his upcoming bout with British fighter Tom (Kong) Watson at Maximum Fighting Championship's MFC 24: Heat XC. "Make sure you bring some money. I'm gonna need bail for murder."
Galbraith, of course, was kidding. But the comment marks the axis in his life, one that criss-crosses the track he was once on with where he's trying to take his future.
Grandfather's death inspires Slugger
Posted: Feb 25, 2010 by CON GRIWKOWSKY, Edmonton Sun
Nobody can figure out what will spark an athlete, what will inspire him to greatness. Dwayne Lewis was a middle-of-the road slugger with a 4-3 record when he faced his moment of inspiration. The Fort McMurray father of three was spending 15 hours a day in his job as a dispatcher/heavy equipment operator for Shell Canada. A week before his next fight, he got the news that the man who brought him up, his grandfather Eric Ropson, had died. Still grieving and unable to train, Lewis was unprepared for the fight. His loss dropped his record to 4-4 and he was at a bit of a crossroads. Since then, Lewis found something inside of him he did not know he had.
