J-MAC Disses Mr. International

Jason MacDonald said he's seeking quality opponents as he eyes the MFC title -- (Mr. International) Shonie Carter doesn't qualify.

Jason (The Athlete) MacDonald doesn’t have a next opponent yet but he is already making waves since re-joining his hometown promotion, the Maximum Fighting Championship.

The veteran fighter from Red Deer stirred up a bit of controversy by referring to fellow fighter Shonie Carter as "a joke."

MacDonald, who was recently cut from the UFC after a 10-fight run in which he went .500, signed a deal earlier this month to come back to where he first made a name for himself as a fighter.

In a press release from the MFC announcing his return, MacDonald (21-12) made it known what his intentions were in fighting again for the Edmonton-based organization.

"My goal is to win the MFC middleweight title," MacDonald said. "The first time around I lost a five-round war with Patrick Cote and now I’ve got the opportunity to chase that dream one more time."

Of course, before he gets that chance he knows he’ll have to win a fight or two against quality guys. A name he threw out was Edwin Dewees. A name he didn’t, at least not as a worthwhile opponent, was Carter, the man called "Mr. International," who defeated him by decision in 2005 in Montreal.

"At this point in his career I think Shonie is a bit of a joke and I’m not sure that a fight with him would be worth it. I’m looking for quality fights and fights that will get me to the title."

Carter, as his nickname suggests, has fought in numerous organizations all over the world and sports a 47-18-7 record in his career. He said he wanted "to fight for every organization in the world that was of any validity."

He is also a former UFC fighter, where he went 3-3 in bouts spread out over the course of six years. Like MacDonald, Carter was in Toronto last weekend for the MMA Expo and had some choice responses for MacDonald.

"I was like, ‘Wow.’ My career is a joke? His hasn’t even started," Carter said. "Last time I checked I beat him in TKO. And that was after he kneed me in the nuts three times during the fight.

Carter, who said he crossed paths with him in Toronto, added: "I didn’t say anything to him because that’s the professionalism in me. But I did air his ass out on the internet because that’s what everybody does now. ... I chose to take my grievances public via the internet."

The Chicago native has one appearance in the MFC, falling to Brad Zazulak in November 2007 by TKO -- as a result of a shoulder injury after he was victim of a barrage of strikes from the mount. He is currently on a three-fight win streak in three different promotions. MacDonald meanwhile has dropped his past two, both in the Octagon by first-round TKO.

Carter went on to promise to “make him bleed” if the two ever fought again.

Whether Carter decides to make a return appearance to Edmonton, and whether MacDonald decides to give him that opportunity, remains to be seen. But it would definitely be a bout with a lot of hype surrounding it.

Not to mention the fact that MacDonald once earned another monicker, the "TUF killer" as he’s put away three almumni of The Ultimate Fighter reality series. Carter was a contestant on the show’s fourth season.
